ICAI’s talent hunt focuses on ‘commerce literacy’


New Delhi, India, February 5, 2018- The Institute of Chartered Accountant of India (ICAI) has been conducting various activities to spread financial literacy in the country. To inculcate the idea of commercial prudence for a healthy economy, the Institute commissioned a talent hunt program – “Commerce Wizard” – last year. In the second edition of the talent hunt program the participation was open on an all India level where a mammoth 15400 students participated.

“Commerce Wizard -2017” is being organised by Career Counseling Sub-group under BOS of ICAI. This was a diagnostic test that measures the concept understanding ability of a student. Unlike other tests which only try to find out how much a child knows, this test was measured how well a student has understood the concepts.

The talent hunt was constituted for creation of large pool of educated population can regular conduct qualitative and quantitative assessment and be part of nation building. It is meant for strengthening the ecosystem to popularize commerce education across the country amongst secondary, senior/higher secondary, graduate students. 

Seeing the response in the previous edition, Commerce Wizard-2017 was divided in two levels of online tests. Out of the 15400 students who participated in the Level-I, 5228 students from different class (XI, XII and Graduation) qualified for the Level-II of the examination. Finally, 4473 students appeared in the Final level where 584 students from Class X, 1531 from Class XI, 1477 from Class XII, and 881 from Graduation level participated.

Out of the cash pool of Rs.10 lakh, top three students from each class received cash prizes worth Rs. 75,000/-, Rs.50,000/- and Rs. 25,000/- for their first three ranks. Few more students received special awards apart from consolation prizes.

Congratulating all the participants, President of ICAI, CA. Nilesh Shivji Vikamsey said, “to man the economic development of the country and to meet the growing needs of the society, there is greater demand for sound development of commerce education in Indian context. This talent hunt exercise endevours to achieve and create a healthy pool of educated commerce youngster.”

Speaking on the occasion, chief guest Shri PP Chaudhary, Hon’ble Minister of State for Corporate Affairs and Law & Justice said “Commerce is considered as one of the most popular career options in India. Commerce education is the backbone of the business and serial development of the nation. This education stresses on developing the people and making effective use of available resources.”

Speaking on the occasion, CA Dhiraj Khandelwal, Convenor CCSg, said, “With the growing economy, commerce education is going to define the entire education ecosystem. We hope in the years to come Commerce-wizard will become yardstick to facilitate admissions to the meritorious candidates on priority basis in various colleges”.

CA Naveen ND Gupta, Vice President, ICAI, CA Atul Kumar Gupta, Chairman, BOS, CA (Dr.) Debashis Mitra, Deputy Convener, CCSg, CA Mangesh P. Kinare also shared their words of wisdom and encouraged the participants.
